Overview
Them Before Us (TBU) is a global nonprofit committed to defending children’s rights to their mother and father in family law, reproductive technology, and cultural norms. Through storytelling, research, and advocacy, TBU challenges adult-centric systems and promotes a child-first ethic around marriage, parenthood, and family formation. With a lean team and a growing global platform, they are shifting the public conversation—one article, law, and testimony at a time.

The Problem
As TBU’s influence grew—across international media, public policy, and grassroots advocacy—the organization began facing the natural challenges that come with nonprofit growth. Team members were wearing too many hats across development, communications, operations, and strategy, all while responding to increasing momentum and opportunity. The internal structure needed to mature to support the expanding mission.

The Solution
ATG partnered with TBU to build the internal systems and strategic clarity needed to sustain growth. Together, we:
Executed an intentional year-end giving campaign aligned with TBU’s mission and voice, leading to record-setting results
Wrote and submitted targeted grant applications to diversify funding streams
Transitioned the donor database into a new CRM, improving segmentation, reporting, and long-term stewardship
Conducted a thorough donor data cleanup to support stronger communications and follow-up
Facilitated a strategic planning process to align budgeting with future growth and create job descriptions for new staff roles
Drafted new board role descriptions and advised on governance to support a more engaged and strategic board
All efforts were made in close partnership with the TBU team, ensuring alignment with their unique voice and mission-driven priorities.
The Impact
Six-figure grant award secured to support core operations and expansion
Year-end giving more than doubled, setting a new benchmark for individual donor support
Sustained double-digit growth across all social media channels and email list
New staff and board members added, increasing team capacity and long-term sustainability
Internal systems now support consistent, scalable communications and development strategies
